Strength, Elegance & Acrobatics – A New Era of Pole Sports and Aerial Arts

Today, pole sports and aerial arts are among the fastest-growing sports disciplines in the world. While many people still associate them primarily with performance art, they are, in fact, highly demanding competitive sports that require exceptional strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance, and mental resilience. Every movement performed by an athlete is the result of years of dedicated training and perseverance.
Pole sports began to emerge as a modern competitive discipline in the early 2000s. A major milestone came in 2009 with the establishment of the International Pole Sports Federation (IPSF), which introduced standardized competition rules, judge education, a unified scoring system, and an international competition framework. The inaugural IPSF Pole Sports World Championships took place in 2012, marking the beginning of a new era for the sport.
In Hungary, the growing pole sports community joined forces to establish the Hungarian Pole Sports Championships, providing Hungarian athletes with their first nationwide competitive platform in 2012. This championship represented a significant milestone, allowing athletes to compete under consistent professional standards while laying the foundation for preparation at the international level.
Since 2017, the Hungarian Pole Sports Championships have been organized under the Hungarian Pole Sports Association, further strengthening the development and recognition of the sport nationwide.

The establishment of the Association marked a new chapter in the development of the sport in Hungary, providing a structured professional framework, an official competition system, and strong international partnerships.
A key figure in this progress was Orsolya Pál, whose leadership helped build solid foundations for Hungarian pole sports and successfully integrated the country into the IPSF's international competition system.
As a result, Hungarian athletes gained the opportunity to qualify for the Pole Sports World Championships and compete at other prestigious international events.
Alongside the rapid growth of pole sports, aerial sports have also gained increasing recognition worldwide. Originating from the traditions of circus arts and acrobatics, aerial sports have evolved into an independent competitive discipline over the past decades. Today, aerial hoop, aerial silks, hammock, and other suspended apparatus are featured not only in artistic performances but also in organized national and international competitions.
Recognizing the close connection between the two disciplines, the IPSF acknowledged that pole sports and aerial sports share the same fundamental principles. Strength, flexibility, technical precision, body awareness, creativity, and safe execution are essential elements of both. As a result, the federation gradually incorporated various aerial disciplines into its international competition framework, further strengthening the professional relationship between the two sports.
This evolution naturally extended to Hungary as well. As the sport expanded and the aerial sports community continued to grow, it became increasingly important for the national governing body to broaden its scope. This led to the establishment of the Hungarian Pole and Aerial Sports Federation (HPASF), the legal successor to the Hungarian Pole Sports Association. Today, the HPASF continues to promote and develop both sports in Hungary while serving as the country's official representative within the International Pole & Aerial Sports Federation (IPSF).

The Federation's mission is to provide a strong professional foundation for athletes, coaches, and clubs, support the development of future generations of competitors, organize high-quality national championships, and promote the successful participation of Hungarian athletes in international competitions.
Another key objective is to strengthen public awareness and recognition of pole sports and aerial sports, demonstrating that these disciplines embody the same values as any other competitive sport: dedication, discipline, perseverance, and excellence.
The development of pole sports and aerial sports in Hungary is a testament to what a committed community can achieve through professional collaboration and strong international partnerships. Over the years, this collective effort has established a sustainable and continuously evolving competition system, creating new opportunities for athletes at every level. The achievements of recent years clearly indicate that both sports will continue to play an increasingly important role, not only in Hungary but also on the international sporting stage.
